Good morning everyone, more catchup. We wiggled our way through 4 states today. We started the day in Atchison, the most haunted spot in Kansas. We wentt to the visitor center/depot. Lots of pics. Ineresting life mask of Lincoln done when he was campaigning here. Good stories of pioneer river crossings, via ferries (high cost) first bridge , eveyone paid, even walkers, and then the "new" free bridge. Now they are woking on another new bridge. It's a ccomplicated job cossing The Missoui ive ( known as the big muddy). Lincoln crossed here, although he walked acrross on the ice. Then up he hill to the birthplace of Amelia Earhart. Lovely homes here high above the river. The home belonged to her grandparents. Large home/Museum. We were the only ones there. In fact TThe caretaker unlocked the house for us. Pictures include Wooden bed she ws born in, Amelia, not the caretaker, the room with white bed and furniture that was her childhood room, and quite a few otther rooms. The downstairs rooms are all filled with memorabilia from her past. The roms were quite elaborite. Wallpaper een on the ceilings. Beautiul stained glass windows. Gothic double doors upstairs over fron door. The clotthing was won by Hillary Swnk while making Earhart movie.
Darn, he keys keep sticking on this cheap keyboard I got, especially the R. I guess you get whatt you pay for. The T isn't so great either. Whe I go back to read later I almost get a headache. Which reminds me, thanks Tom for the suggesttion re only hoizontal pics. I guess a lot of you are getting sore necks tuning your heads. I'll do my best.
TThe model of tthe ed plane ws her favorite. The silver was the plane she disappeared in. There is a poster of her leaving from Oakland to begin her trip. Couldn'tt get good pictures on the ground of ou next stop so if interestd go to Amelia Earhat earthworks. Crossed thru Nebrska, Missouri and on tto Glenwood Iowa and the beautiful home of our friends, John and Jackie Curtin. Big storm coming, snow and hail predicted. We have our own suite here, brick and cement constuction so we feel quite safe and cozy. Don parrked poor Cmor as close under the gaarage overhang as he could. The Curtins daughter 10 miles away, recently had two cas totaled and windows on the side off her home destoyed by hail. After watching weathr reports, w told John and Jackie we mightt be here until May.
Wednesday, Thanks to snow tires, just in case, we were able to play touist again. They we great guides. Amazing art all over the streets of Omaha. Jim, you would love the buildings. We went to The Joslyn Museum. It was beathtaking. Many, many great artist tht I had neve been able tto see before. Incredible Chahuly Piece as you entered. Small white clay model
of indian and horse. Large bronze copy in garden of Museum. I could have stayed there all day but Jr. got bored. A few pictures caused us to cover his eyes. John and Don wer not bothered. We went to the College baseball stadium thata replaced the one ou Son-in-law Goldie played in when he ws in the College World Series. We had a geat lunch at Shucks, a seafood restaurat.
Our lastt stop of the day was Boys Town. Whatt a marvelous place. It was very inspirering to see what one man, with God's help did. It is a huge campus with lovely brick indiviual family homes. Each has a couple that has been trained and approx 8 children per home.
We saw the Churrch with Father Flanagans Coffin. We wnt to the Hall of history. Saw the oscar, Spencer Tracy won and lots o memorabilia. There was a bronze bust with n name on it, with a plaque down near the ground. I came around the corner to find Don laying on the ground to try to read it. It
was only the artist name. We later found outt it was Low Gehrig. Back tto the house to wait for the storm. The road to the huse is rock and John collects vegetable oil from local restaurants to pour on
it. They told us about the possums licking tthe oil off. I almost forgott anotther exciting thing that happened tto us. We stopped for gas just after cossing the Missouri. As we we pulling out, a few minues later, 2 cop cas flew by in the directtion we had justt come from. Then two more. And more. We started counting. One unmarked car with lightts flashing inside, stopped in front of us and they gott out and put flak jackets on before continuing on. We counted 26 police cas, 2 ambulances ( 1 woman driver Jenny) and two fire trucks. It was 1/4 mile down the road bdut no one knew wha was happening. Yestterday, using ourr gas receipt my clever husband called the station and found outt there had been a murder recently and they had been huntter for the killerr. He was spottted and hey put down nail strips t stop him. The sty was he hit the stips at high speed and rolled 13 times. he and passenger were taken to the hospital. We just barely missed being in tthe wrong place. TThank you God! Okay, enough for now. I'll ty to add pictues. It's 5:30 amm here and I tthik the sorm missed us. I's still dark out so I'm not sure. Did I mention lots of thunde and lightening the irstt nightt? Hugs, Donn
