Lincoln

Hello again, I spend so much time with the Kahunas (kids) that you adults some times get the short version so if you're not too bored and want more, Jr's blog is travelingwithjr.blogspot.com.

Let Sycamore and DeKalb and headed South on parts of Rte 66. Went to Lincoln, only town named for him in his lifetime. Rumors are he Christened town by spitting out Watermelon seeds. Went to train station and Postville Courthouse. How did he spend 25 years riding the judicial circut at 4 miles a day on a horse?

next on to Springfield and the Union Station.  Model inside of Linoln's death train. Actual car burn down in 1911. Clocks of tower of depot a little over 8 feet tall.  Went to old state capital and "new" state capital. On to his law offices and statues of Lincoln, Mary Todd and Son, church where he rented a pew. Read a quote from Lincoln. He called his marriage to Mary, "a matter of profound wonder". I asked Don if he felt that way about me. He said "yes, I am always profoundly wondering what you are talking about."We toured the only house Lincoln ever bought. It was one story tall and as his family grew, he added another floor. There was a model of the original home in one of the houses at the historical site surrounding the house.  Lots of original furniture and accessories have been returned to the home. Saw his bed and accessory beneath it. Interesting story of his small desk in his room. He spent so much time there that Mary reached the breaking point. One day, she opened the window and threw it out. A neighbor asked if he could have it and repair the parts that had broken in the fall. She agreed and years later the desk was found in The Ford Theater. Weird coincidence.

 coincidence.
